Marist Mission & Solidarity

Mission and Solidarity
A number of opportunities are offered for students to put their faith into practice and to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalised. These opportunities can be categorised as follows:
Annual Lenten Appeal:
All members of the St Joseph’s College family are encouraged to contribute to our Lenten Appeal. Funds are directed primarily to the Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity (MAPS) appeal.
Tanzania Immersion opportunity:
An opportunity for students in Year 10 and Year 12 to work at the School of St Jude in Tanzania. This school was formed and is run by Australian, Gemma Sisia. The boys work in the school, form connections with the students and visit families.
Indigenous Immersion opportunity:
An opportunity for students in Year 11 to work and live among a remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley region of WA. Students become immersed in the culture and develop an important understanding of Indigenous spirituality.
Timor-Leste Immersion:
An opportunity for students in Year 10. Students will spend their time working with the Marist Brothers who are in the process of building a boarding school at Lautem, near Baucau, and also engaging with the young people at Katilosa.
Kirbati Immersion:
An opportunity for students in Year 10 to work at the Kiribati School and Centre for Children with Disabilities. Students will engage in various activities including some manual labour and will also visit and establish ‘buddy’ contacts at Sacred Heart College at St Louis High School.
Community Service:
All students are encouraged to do community service. Formal opportunities currently include visiting the elderly at the local care home (Year 11) and the Marist Children’s Holiday Camp for children with disabilities (Years 11).
Social Justice:
The opportunity exists for students to attend a variety of social justice forums and meetings hosted by a number of Catholic Church agencies and schools.
Acolyte and Liturgical Leader Program:
Students in Year 11 are invited to apply for this significant role of service within the College.
