Preparing for Boarding

Preparing for Boarding
Linen and Laundry
Linen
- All necessary bed linen is provided for the boys at the College. This includes a blanket but not a doona.
- All beds are a King Single. You are welcome to provide a doona and doona cover for your son. A double doona works best on a king single.
- It is not recommended that boys bring their own pillow
- College linen is washed once a week.
Laundry
There are several washes that all boarders have access to:
Quick Wash – Each boy is given a mesh quick wash bag. This is used to wash underwear, socks and light clothes such as singlets. This wash goes out every week night and is usually returned the next school afternoon. Clothes do not leave the bag and hence are not ironed.
Blue Shirts Wash – Blue shirts are collected each weekday morning and are returned that afternoon ironed and hung on a coat-hanger.
General Wash – This wash is for all other clothing (play-clothes, towels, whites, Greys). The general wash is returned in the boys’ large laundry bag (provided by the College). This means that boys also need to put their laundry bag in the wash each time General Wash is put out.
Sports Wash – This wash is for dirty sports gear.
Marking Clothes
All clothing, including shoes and bags need to be marked.
It is impossible to return lost items if they are not marked. Clothes are to be marked with first name, surname and laundry number. All other items should show the NAME of the student.
Mark: Blue shirts and T-shirts on the collar; trousers, shorts and underwear on waist; singlets on top near tag; socks inside the top; shoes inside the tongue.
As a temporary measure clothes may be marked by using a permanent laundry marker. However, as soon as possible, all items should be permanently marked using name tags. These may be ordered from Cash’s labels and are the sew on variety. Iron on tags will not be suitable.
All other items need to be clearly marked. Since each boy will be living with others it is possible for any items to get mixed up as they tend to be similar or identical. To avoid confusion and assist in locating lost items, marking is the only method.
Please ensure to order your son’s laundry name tags from Cash’s Labels.
Full boarders, weekly boarders and day students are required to purchase sew-on laundry tags which have a student’s full name and laundry number (ID number). This ensures clear identification of similar or identical clothing items when lost or misplaced. Laundry tags can be purchased online through Cash’s Labels. You will be advised of your son(s) ID number via a separate email.
The preferred style is Standard Style 9 – Red.
The minimum order for laundry tags is two dozen. You may like to order more to last the duration of your son(s) time at Joeys.

Boarding Facilities
Years 7-9
Year 7 to 9 dormitories are located on the upper floors of the College’s historic sandstone building, where boarders have been sleeping since the 1890s.
Modern, comfortable dormitories provide each year group with its own shower block and each boy has a bed, small desk and a locker in his press area for personal possessions.
During down time in the dormitories, the boys can play table tennis or pool, or watch a movie in dedicated TV areas with plenty of space to lounge.The open, inclusive nature of the dormitory design in these junior years contributes to the formation of strong, family-like bonds between boys in the same year group, and boys who are themselves engaged and happy, supported by friends and compassionate boarding staff who live on-site or close to the College.
Year 10
Accommodation in Year 10 is dormitory style but gives special regard to privacy and study facilities. Individual areas are roomier than those of the younger boys and comprise a bed, large desk, shelving and locker, with a high partition separating each.
The accommodation is in a modern, well-equipped building, opposite the playing fields known as the Back Ovals and next to the College’s outdoor basketball courts.
The boys have their own large common room with kitchen and lounges, where in their downtime they can play pool and table tennis and watch TV.
Year 11
Year 11 boarders have similar living arrangements to Year 10, with emphasis on privacy and study facilities. The spacious press areas in each dormitory are separated by high partitions and each has a bed, large desk, shelving and locker. The Year 11 block is a stone’s throw from the Main Building and is home to 150 boys who have access to a large common room with kitchen, lounges and TV, pool and table tennis.
Year 12
The Year 12 boarding block has more than 170 spacious individual bed–study rooms with expansive desk and shelving space that reflect the academic needs of young men studying for their HSC.
They have access to shared relaxation and recreation areas, including an undercover outdoor dining area with barbecues adjacent to the common room, where there are pool and table tennis tables, a kitchen, lounges and television.
Breakout communal study spaces are interspersed between the students’ rooms and are equipped with tables and chairs, whiteboards and screens, enabling the boys to work collaboratively to assist and support each other through the crucial final year at the College.
Student Mobile Phones
Students are allowed to have mobile phones at the College and use them under the following conditions. Mobile phones are not to be carried or used:
– on campus from 8.00am until 3.30pm;
– in dining rooms;
– at sport;
– during evening study;
– after lights out.
During these times students are required to store mobile phones securely in their lockers. Years 7 to 9 boarding students will have their phones stored in the Head of Year’s office each night after lights out.
