Leave & Visiting Information

The many opportunities families have to participate in College life lead to the formation of lifelong friendships and networks of support between families as well as between the boys – networks that criss-cross country and city and beyond, given the geographic diversity of the Joeys student population.
Overnight Leave
Permission for overnight leave on Saturday is obtained by parents through their son’s Head of Year. Parents are required to make such requests by submitting an application through the College’s online software program, Orah. Details of how to access this online portal will be given to all parents when their son(s) commence at the College by their Head of Year.
Overnight leave from the College is granted only after approval of a parent/guardian of the student. Requests for overnight leave are to be made to your son’s Head of Year and are required to be submitted through Orah.
When leaving for an overnight, boys are to go immediately to the care of the responsible adult indicated by their parents.
If a boy is not spending an overnight with his parents it is required that his parents have made contact with those adults who will be responsible for him and are fully aware and approve of how he will be spending his overnight leave. It is also the responsibility of the parents to ensure the personal details (name, age, address and telephone number) of the responsible adult who will be looking after their son are communicated to the relevant Head of Year.
An overnight request should arrive no later than Thursday evening so Heads of Year have sufficient time to process, check and communicate the request.
A separate application is required for each leave and may be sent as far in advance as is convenient
Sunday Leave
On Sundays, boys in Years 10, 11 and 12, who have not requested an overnight leave, may leave the College after breakfast and return by 5.00pm with permission from their Head of Year. On Sundays, boys in Years 7, 8 and 9, who have not requested an overnight leave, are not permitted to leave the College but are encouraged to attend the Sunday boarders activity which is organised by boarding staff.
Visiting
Saturday
Friends and relatives are most welcome and encouraged to watch games on Saturdays. The boys will know the times and locations of their games by Thursday morning each week and can also be found on the sport section of the Joeys website www.joeys.org. Boys are to remain on College property at all times.
During weekdays
Because of the obvious disruption to the boys’ timetable, it is preferred that any visiting during weekdays be the exception and take place preferably during lunchtime or after school between 3.45pm and 5.00pm. Families are welcome to have lunch within the College grounds with their sons on weekdays.
Going out for dinner
When country/overseas parents are in Sydney and wish to take their son out for dinner this can be arranged by prior contact with their son’s Head of Year. City parents who have a special occasion they wish their son to attend must also contact the Head of Year prior to the event. Requests for Dinner Leave are made through Orah and should include the reason for the request. It is important for such requests to be limited as boys can often miss valuable night study time.
Lunch Leaves
One of the wonderful features here at Joeys is that you can join your son and his friends for lunch on the main lawn. For this to take place, you or your son needs to enter the Lunch Leave Request via Orah.
Arrange a day to meet your son and possibly some of his friends, bring in some food and enjoy some time on the main lawn with them. Nothing else needs to be done here apart from ensuring that your son returns to Period 5 on time. It is important to note that the boys must always be supervised by an adult while on a lunch leave.
Omnia and Orah
Parents are able to use Omnia to submit the Day student departure times and these are entered through the Parent Portal.
Parents of day students are asked to nominate a departure time of either 5 or 8pm for the week. This needs to be submitted prior to 9pm every Sunday night (hopefully we will have this running to plan this weekend). If you are a parent of a day student, you are able to log into Omnia each week, and enter the departure times for your son for that week.
To do this, you need to log into Orah, create a new pass and select Day Student Time Change.
When your son commences in 2025 you will be provided with a separate login to Orah. Orah is used to submit Leave Requests. Orah is also used to submit:
- Sick leave requests
- Medical appointments
- Overnight or weekend leave for boarders
- Lunch leaves
- Tutoring
- And so on.
