-
If your son already holds a School Opal Pass (e.g. from Year 6): please visit Transport NSW to update your details.
Please keep your existing Opal card, because eligible cards will be automatically updated for the new school year.
Boarders travel Card
Boarders are entitled to free travel home within NSW. Boarders will require a Boarders Pass to receive free travel on NSW TrainLink services. Parents/Guardians wishing to apply for a Boarders Pass will need to complete an application prior to commencement at the College.
You will need to visit Transport NSW and complete an application. Once completed please print and forward the application to the College for endorsement. NB: Application must then be endorsed by the College. Please send to travel@joeys.org.
Many boarders travel to and from St Joseph’s College on TrainLink services. On the homeward journey, students are either collected by coach at the College gates or depart from Central Station. A College bus is used to transport students from the College to Central for their departure. Students going home are generally dropped off at the railway station closest to their home destination. On return trips students are dropped off at the College gates if travelling by coach, or at Central Station if travelling by train. A College bus is used to meet most trains at Central Station.
Bookings are made by parents through the College. An email is sent to all country boarder parents advising the booking form is on the College iLearn page and bookings must be completed by the closing date. All bookings received are sent to TrainLink; bookings not made by the due date cannot be accepted by the College. Late bookings are to be made directly with TrainLink and will usually be allocated to a regularly scheduled TrainLink service, not a school service.
Once bookings have been made, students are to check their travel details are correct on the boarders TrainLink list, which is displayed on dormitory noticeboards. It is a good idea for parents/carers to place a reminder in their son’s diary three weeks into each term to let the College know of your booking requirements in case of miscommunication.
Once bookings have been finalised, tickets will be issued to the students two days prior to departure. The travel timetable with arrival and departure information will be posted on the College iLearn page.
Students may wish to travel at the end of term to go to a friend’s house (often in a rural area). There is a charge by TrainLink for this travel which is put on the student’s account. Please submit the College travel booking form by the due date. Bookings cannot be guaranteed for students not travelling to their home destination. Preference for the limited seating available remains with the boarding students travelling home, provided their booking was made by the nominated deadline. For group bookings parents should make a reservation directly with regular NSW TrainLink services (132 232).
The current arrangement with TrainLink is for all luggage to be carried on the train or coach. Each student may carry a maximum of two cases, not exceeding 60cm high, 70cm long, 50cm wide (i.e. length, depth and width not exceeding 180cm) and 20kg in weight. Plus, one item of hand luggage provided it weighs no more than 5kg and must be able to be stored under the seat. Boxes, milk crates, surfboards, cricket sets and large musical instruments are not allowed.
Plane bookings are not normally made by the College. It is advisable to make all plane bookings well in advance since school travel bookings are often quite heavy. Transport to Mascot Airport is by taxi which the College will book if required students will need to pay for the taxi on the day of travel.
